Taxation of shares – Latest update

1. Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG):

Holding Period: More than 12 months.
Capital Gains: Tax rate: 12.5% (after ₹1.25 lakh exemption).
Capital Loss: Can be set off against LTCG for up to 8 years.

 

2. Short-Term Capital Gains (STCG) :

Holding Period: Less than 12 months.
Capital Gains: Tax rate: 20%, irrespective of the tax slab.
Capital Loss: Can be set off against LTCG/STCG for up to 8 years.

 

3. Intraday Trading:

Holding Period: Bought and sold on the same day.
Capital Gains: Treated as speculative business income.
Taxed at the applicable slab rates.
Capital Loss: Can be set off only against speculative income for up to 4 years.

 

Additional Notes :

Dividends and Derivatives Trading: Taxed as per the applicable slab rates.
Effective Date: Applicable from FY 2024-25.
